Finding Old Quest Chains

I mentioned yesterday my big ordeal to pick up the quest chain I had going for Wyrmcrest Accord. I jumped on my shaman last night and saw somebody advertising for the group quests. (Keep in mind these are level 72-ish quests that I just didn't get around to doing when I was about 72. I'm now 80 with the then active spec of enhancement.) So, for easy gold, I decided to help out, and actually do the quests as well.

One guy leaves our full group, so the group leader goes looking for in general chat for somebody else. "Let's just do them, I'm sure I count as 2 people," I say... in general chat. Oops. lol. But yeah, we did just fine with 3 lvl 72's and me as a lvl 80 for these 3- to 5-man quests. lol.

At any rate... once I finished those, I decided to go look for that quest chain again. I look in my quest log... "Hey, what's this quest... that's... part of... the chain I was looking for." Sigh. The quest giver for that quest was in the area just West of Wyrmcrest Temple. A place that I had flown over previously, but didn't see the question mark because I flew by too quickly. So... yeah. I found the chain.

Picking Up Old Quest Chains

I'm very much enjoying healing 5-man content on my shaman. I'm actually looking forward to a night when we need a healer for a 10-man raid so I can try my hand out there. But I also find that there's a bit more work that I'm going to have to put in to my shaman. He's got maxed out Mining (yeah, Toughness) and I'm still working on Jewelcrafting as a kind of side project. But the immediate focus is reputations.

And if you play a healer, you probably guessed that my first faction is that of the Wyrmrest Accord. The item "need" that won't go away until next expansion is the Arcanum of Blissful Mending; there's really no other substitute for it, so I need to get Revered. The Gavel of the Brewing Storm is a pretty good upgrade for my weapon, but I really should just have a guildie make me a Titansteel Guardian.

So, I went off questing in Dragonblight, which was a zone that I kind of 1/2 skipped. These level 72 quests are pretty easy for a level 80, so I just decided to do as many as I could. But after finishing most of them, I realized that I should probably finish the ones over at Wyrmrest Temple since I knew those (and the dailies) would be Wyrmrest rep. Only problem is, the dailies weren't available to me. A quick jaunt over to Wowwiki tells me that I need to start the quest chain off of an item drop over near Stars' Rest.

Long story short, I kill the guy and can't find it. I no longer have any quests over at Stars' Rest (completeted those ages ago), and can't seem to figure out the next step. The only place I didn't check was down in the Tuskar camp, but that quest seemed optional. I'll have to check there tonight.

Anyway, the whole point is... it's a pain to pick up quest chains you stopped months ago.

Argent Tournament: Champion

Last night I stayed up way too late to finish up my last few quests to become Champion of SW after the raid. (I didn't have time before the raid.) I was expecting that the defeat the Black Knight quest would open up and then just the other faction quests. I didn't realize that I'd be faced with a bunch of other dailies for the Champion Badges. Sure, that makes sense, I just didn't think about that one.

I'm getting to the point where I'm almost starting to get burned out on these quests. It's taken a bit longer than the rest of the dailies I've suffered through, but I also haven't gotten burned out yet. The small motivator now is to complete quests and become champion for the other factions so that I can get Champion's Writs and then get exalted with my home factions. I guess just something inside me figures that I've done enough stuff for cities like IF and SW especially, that I really should be exalted with them. But no, I'm still only revered. I'm only about 2k away from SW rep, but I might as well focus on another one and get the SW rep with the 25% extra they give to all other factions.

So, will I be champion of all factions? I'm thinking I probably will... but not at the consistent rate I did it with SW. But I now have an Argent Squire. Of course... for somebody that's not really a fan of "pets", I'm not really excited about this one either. But at least it's not some smelly skunk pet.

Another Player in the House to Run Heroics

I sat down with my wife last night to play some Wow with her. She was still about 4 bubbles away from hitting 80. We did a couple of dailies. (I forget how good those are for xp considering how easy they generally are (or become after the 50th time you've done them).) She was still about 2 bubbles away when we were about to head over to Shalatzar Basin.

The guild raid had been going on without me, but they were a couple short for Thadius, and even one body increases total raid damage by about 5%... and that's if I just stood on the correct side. (10% increase due to Polarity Shift, but only effecting 1/2 the raid, so... 5%.) And then we just had Sapp and Kel to kill, so I didn't really want to bow out.

So, somewhere in the middle of one of those three fights, my wife dinged 80. And there was much rejoicing. I think she's still pretty dang nervous about raiding. She's nervous about taking somebody else's spot that would really care about this sort of thing. She's nervous about messing up. But I think she's learned a heck of a lot more than she realizes, and she'll be a pretty great asset to our raids. Now... if we can just get her some gear.

p.s. I won the Valorous Frostfire Circlet so I now have an epic helm and 4/4 to get my set bonus. /cheer

The Not-So-Solo Player

I've pretty much leveled with my wife through her entire Wow career. She leveled with my hunter until around mid-30’s and she no longer felt needed because I could heal, tank, and dps. So, we moved on to me leveling my shaman with her priest through level 70 and the instances we did together. She did most of Howling Ford by herself once Wotlk came out, but then the rest of the quests have been done with my mage.

She’s probably about 79.75 currently. I’ve finished all of the quests in every Northrend zone except for Icecrown (about 50%) and Sholazar Basin (completed 11 quests). I completed Dragonblight without her, and I suggested she go back and do those quests while I was raiding, but she just doesn’t enjoy playing by herself.

So, at this point, she’d either have to catch up with me and do some 80 quests in Icecrown (which due to phasing, I’d probably not be able to help her with most of the quests), have me help her with Dragonblight quests (reduced xp due to non-80 quests), or catch up with the 11 quests in Sholazar Basin (again, reduced xp). She wasn’t really excited about any of those options.

She’ll be out for a few hours tonight, so I figured I could start on the Icecrown quests and maybe even get her to 80 in the process. Of course, I wouldn’t do it; that would be against the EULA. I’d have one of the kids do it. :D

I was a little surprised at her response to my plan: “No way! Anadori’s my toon. You don’t get to play her. It’s like I did all the hard work, and now you want to take credit to get her to 80. Nuh-uh.”

When I explained the conundrum we’re now in, she agreed to do some solo’ing and hit level 80 while I raided. Honestly, I thought she’d be happy to hit 80 and be able to get in to instances (heroics) easier. Boy, how wrong was I?

Icecrown

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Icecrown quests, and so far, it's one of my favorite zones. Without too many spoilers, here's the gist of the zone.

You get sent out to the zone from Dalaraan. The one-way flight they give you puts you on top of this giant flying ship that circles in the eastern part of the zone. They then send you to this one area to start all the quests in the zone. As you complete quests, more parts of the zone become populated with NPC's you can get other quests from. Along with that, there's daily quests that open up as well.

Think of it as Isle of Quel'Danas, but instead of things opening up when the server completes a certain number of quests, things open up when you complete a certain number of quests. The whole zone has that phasing thing, so there could also be a ton of people in the same area, but they won't be spoiling the quest line for you since you can't see them.

So far, it's a very interesting story of how all of the landscape changes. One of the quests has you heading all over the place (Moonglade and Shatt) to save somebody. It's a fun diversion (and they provide portals for you).

My favorite quest, just becaues I found it to be quite different is also a daily quest. King of the Mountain has you get in this robot, and you jump to the top of the mountain to plant a flag. It's also a PVP quest, so there's horde trying to do the same thing. Here's some hints. Don't worry about falling, you don't take fall damage. Also, you don't have to jump onto solid ground, so just jump onto the side of a mountain and then jump again before you fall too far. You can get to the top in a matter of seconds if you scale straight up like that.

At any rate, I hear there's also a movie, so I'll continue questing there so that I can see that. I still haven't replaced much of my gear at this point, but I'm slowly starting to. I went straight out there at lvl 77, so you don't have to wait until 80 to go out there. And the zone is basically designed to be used with a flying mount, so that's nice as well. There... there's one bonus of Cold Weather Flying. lol.

Veteran of the Wrathgate

For those that haven't quite gotten there yet, I wanted to highlight a "Fun Quest" (as my category puts it). Really, it's more of a required quest line. If you have a toon at 80 and you missed these quests, you must go back and do it. Now.

I'm talking about the quest line for the Veteran of the Wrathgate achievement. It's probably best to simply go look it up on Wowhead on the link provided. It's about 20 quests for the Horde and 30 quests for the Alliance. I believe they're pretty much all in Dragonblight. Pretty easy quests. They're all soloable. Good xp as well.

Why should I drop everything to do this now, you ask? Am I that obsessed with achievements that I think you must do all of them? No, of course not. The reason for the urgency and prodding is that once you turn in Return to Angrathar (the alliance one linked, Horde one is here), you get to see this sweet in game movie.

I won't say anything about it to avoid spoilers, but I think it's a lot of fun how Blizzard really has thrown Arthas in our face ever since we entered Northrend, just like they said they would. It really feels like everyone has a chance to mess with him, very much unlike Illidan in the Burning Crusade.

What are you still doing here? Go quest, now!

Sparkles!!!

I know Blizzard implemented this like almost a year ago (or so it seems), but I'm really glad that things sparkle when there's loot AND when there's a quest item to collect. Last night in my first few quests in Dragonblight, I was instructed to go blow up a mine. And I noticed that there's now sparkles where you're supposed to use the item (in this case, a bomb).

So, while I am grateful for the sparkles, they're also a bane to me. I guess for somebody that can be so focused when raiding, I sometimes get a little distracted when questing. "Ok, I'm gonna go do this quest over.... hey, what's this?"

What's also funny is that in a raid, I almost never loot anything. Sure, I've probably walked over a small fortune in gray items, but I'm just too focused on the next boss, or the next strategy, or making sure everybody's having a good time, etc.

But overall... Blizzard? Thank you for the sparkles.

The Bossy Quest Leader

So, apparently I've become bossy when I play Wow with my wife. I guess it made sense when we were leveling through and up to 70 because I generally knew the quests and where to go next. After our adventures in Beta and her liberating revelation that all these Wrath quests are new to me, she wants to be more independent and not follow me around like a lemming. Okay, I can completely understand that. Furthermore, I actually like the idea that she thinks like that. To me, it's that she's getting into the game more, and not just playing because I play.

So, yesterday morning when I was playing, I did all of the quests in the first couple areas in Howling Ford. Then last night, when my wife played for the first time post release, we decided that we'd run through Utgarde Keep. I couldn't remember how many quests into the chain it was until you got the quest for some guys head and steal some weapons from Utgarde. So, I helped her do the first few quests en route to those two quests. I kept saying "go here", and "where are you going" and "just get all the quests quick." Yeah, well... my ex-lemming didn't like that too much. I got the group together to run UK pretty quick, so she didn't even get the quests she needed. (No huge loss... just means we run it again.)

I think she may have been relieved when I wanted to keep questing on Leiandra to hit 71, leaving her to complete the quests I had already done on her own. I completely understand where she's coming from. I have friends that will do quests so fast I didn't even have time to read the quest text (which I generally enjoy doing). So, I just have to remember to stop being so bossy, let her do things at her pace, and generally enjoy the ride, not just rush to 80 ASAP.

On that note... Lightning Infused Relics was a fun quest that starts with Walt at the Explorers' League Outpost. It's like you get to be Iron Man. lol.

My Wife, the Hallowed

I don't recall how many times I headed over to Scarlet Monastery over these past 2 weeks or so, but I can tell you that I did not get a Squashy Pet or one of the Pumpkin Heads for the achievement, but I did do practically everything else. And as far as getting those drops from Trick or Treating... well... let's just say that I got tricked to many times that it wasn't even funny anymore. Never did I get a toothpick or any of the other BoP drops needed for those two achievements.

My wife, however was lucky enough to get all of them. And after having me grab the candy bags over all of Kalimdor and Outlands for her, and persuading her to do some Pvp for the 50 H.K.'s (I was going to have to do it for her), she got all of the Halloween achievements. Well... all except the mask which is supposed to be patched out as a requirement from what I hear.

But it's nice to have her "excited" about something in Wow. She enjoys the game. She enjoys hanging out with me. But when we get online the response to "What do you want to do?" is usually "Whatever." So, she's now taking the next step to becoming even more of a Wow nerd... I may actually get her to research something for her toon soon. lol.

Doing Hated Quests

The leveling of my paladin is coming along slowly, but that's okay. Just clarifying yesterday's post, I probably only lvl the pally for about 30 minutes or less at a time. 5 minutes before I need to get on Leiandra to start sending out raid invites? No problem, kill a few mobs with my paly. Things like that. I still keep my normal regime of raiding, playing with my wife and getting her geared up, etc. It's kind of a side-hobby, if you will. That's kind of the background in case you start thinking "Why is it taking him forever just to get another 1.5 levels?"

Last night, I went and did The Cursed Crew. This may sound strange, but I think it's one of my most hated quests. Why do I have such a hatred for a level 29 quest?

Part of it is the fact it's underwater. I don't particularly like underwater quests. Unless you're a shaman, druid, or warlock, you have to come up for air every 60 seconds. Sure, I could also buy an underwater breathing potion, but that seems like such a waste for just one "easy" quest. Then there's the fact that sometimes in the close quarters of the ship and being underwater, my camera gets disoriented or whatnot, and sometimes I just get trapped in the lower decks of the ship.

Also, a lot of the underwater boat quests have mobs tightly packed in to the boat. So, it's not only that you have 60 seconds to kill a mob and get back up for air, but that you have 60 seconds to kill, avoid adds, and get back up for air. I also recognize that you can move back up to the surface once you've engaged a mob, but sometimes it's just not possible, or maybe just inconvenient.

Part of it may be that I don't like getting cursed (mage and druid obviously excluded), and having to be... essentially undead. I'm a human, for goodness sake. Hmm.. maybe it's partly I don't want to be undead. lol.

But the reason I hate The Cursed Crew up in Wetlands is that I dislike the quest (for the above stated reasons), and yet I do it EVERY time I'm questing in the Wetlands. Why, oh why do I subject myself to this displeasure? Is it the cool quest reward I get at the end of the chain? Nope. Is it because it's easy xp? I suppose to a degree, but there's other quests out there, so not really. So, the reason I hate it is because I dislike it, I do it every time, and yet, I have no idea why I do. How's that for insanity? lol.

Please tell me that somebody else out there has at least some similar insanity about a quest. Please?

Fast Track Through Level 69

My wife and I burned through a ton of quests on Sunday night and got half way through level 69. We've been questing in Netherstorm, so that's where I'm going to focus today.

I've spent a good deal of time out in Kirin'Var Village. That's the area East by South-East of Manaforge Coruu. Most of my time there has been to farm the Mana Seekers and Mageslayers for Motes of Mana on Wizard Row. It's a great place to farm because they are the object of A Fate Worse Than Death, so that means that the more people there farming/questing, the faster the respawn rate. I don't think I've ever had to wait for another mob to kill like I have for other farm spots. But the better questing spots start South and East of there.

There are 4 named mobs in the area. They are: Abjurist Belmara (South of Wizard Row), Battle-Mage Dathric, Cohlien Frostweaver, and Conjurer Luminrath (all East of Wizard Row). So, the easy part is that you kill each of them, loot the quest items, place them back in their proper spots in Wizard Row (preferably as you're doing the other quests in the area, like the one I mentioned above or The Unending Invasion), and then turn them in to Custodian Dieworth. BAM! 12k experience each. That's 48k just for killing 4 mobs. If you do A Fate Worse Than Death as well, that's another 12k, so a total of 60k that can easily be done in about 15-20 minutes.

We started just barely having dinged 69 (oh that's right.. we need to go to trainers), and ended the session in just a couple hours half way to 70. So, if you're looking to quest for experience or gold (at 70 you get 7g each), I'd make sure you do these relatively easy quests.

TourGuide Mod

When leveling a toon and coming to a new quest hub, my general rule is to get all of the quests, and then start at the top of my quest log and work down. I may even make a special trip back to the quest hub if the reward is particularly attractive. In doing this method, I've noticed mistakes many times as in: "Dang... I could have killed these mobs that were just 2 steps over instead of traveling to the other side of the map to complete that other quest." For the efficiency reason along, I started looking at leveling guides.

For those that have not seen it yet, TourGuide is an excellent add-on for those that are leveling toons. The latest version seems complete for the Alliance, and I believe it's mostly complete for the Horde.

What is TourGuide?
It is an in-game mod that guides you to be more efficient in your leveling process. The creator has loaded a leveling guide that will tell you when to get quests, when to turn them in, and when to go the next area. It automatically brings up kill/collection quest status for you for the next quest you should be working on, and there's generally coordinates of where you should go to complete the next step.

Do I have to do everything TourGuide says?
Of course not. There's things I skip, but I generally try to stick with it so that I don't miss any first quests to those important chain quests that I'll want later.

Why don't you just use one of the Leveling Guides from some web site out there?
Well, this is from a web site. :) But I found that this in-game mod that automatically tracks my quests and locations makes knowing the next step so much faster. No more having to alt-tab out to a pdf or web site to know where to go next... no more losing your spot in said pdf or web site. And multiple toons in those external things? Forget about it. But with TourGuide, it's all taken care of for you.

So, if you're leveling toons and you want to be efficient in your quests, head on over and check out this mod.

Fun Quests: Introduction and Test Flight

Since I spend a decent amount of time leveling alts on non-raid days (although none of them have hit 70 yet), I thought I'd start a new "feature" focusing on some of the fun quests that I enjoy through my leveling process. I know a lot of these will be old news for many of you. It may bring back nostalgic for others. But I figured it might be fun to write about, and I always enjoy your comments about, well... everything. :) Plus, I may be better at getting screen shots, because I'm usually thinking about way too much during raids to remember. :) I may also make this a feature of "guess that fun quest", if you guys think that might be fun.

Today I'm starting with a group of quests in a zone I completely bypassed (except to farm for Enchant Weapon - Major Spellpower through all of lvl 68 when it used to drop from the Razaani Spell Thieves pre patch 2.1). For those of you enchanters out there (or those that simply pay attention), you'll know that I'm talking about Blade's Edge.

I found most of the quests out at Toshley's Station to be quite entertaining. And what Star Wars geek wouldn't with all the Star Wars references floating around down there. I finished the last of the Test Flight series last night and stole a screen shot from Wowhead to prove it. :) This quest is called Test Flight: Ruuan Weald, and just like the other Test Flights, you get thrown into the air by some major electrical contraption, and then at the last second, when you're about to land, you get smashed into the ground (for a small amount of damage). What makes the Ruuan Weald version the best is that A) you get thrown the furthest, and B) you get to use a Nether-weather Vane that sends you twirling around in circles through the duration of your flight. It's a lot of fun.

You can also use the Test Flights to get thrown close to some of the objectives for the other quests at Toshley's Station. (I used Tour Guide to help with that coordination.)
